We are in the heart of wedding season, which means gifts, gifts and more gifts—bachelorette parties, wedding showers, the wedding gift itself, and probably a few that I am forgetting along the way. In addition to finding that perfect something for the new couple, there is no room for error on the wrapping job (a craft that has never made it into my repertoire of talents).
Bring in the second collection for Target by Japanese artist Ayomi Yoshida, which includes exquisite, modern kamon designs (12th-century floral crests worn by warriors and aristocrats) rendered in bold colors and geometric shapes and printed on gift boxes, wrapping paper, photo albums, scrapbooks, photo boxes and note pads.

Yoshida is the youngest in a widely recognized family of artists and a fourth-generation printmaker. She is known for minimal yet powerful graphics and is most recognized for her room-sized installations of woodchips and carved woodblocks crafted for museums and galleries in Japan and the US.

In her own words, Yoshida notes that “The making of a work of art is a complex experience. There are times when a sensory or an intellectual approach is not enough and it is necessary to reflect on one’s maturity as an evolved species. I believe that making such works has helped me to grow as an artist and as a human being.”
Now that is the perfect motivation I need to add a little artistic flair to my gift wrapping prowess this year.
*The collection is currently available now in stores nationwide and will be available through July 12th with prices ranging from $1.99 for a small gift bag to $19.99 for a scrapbook kit.*
