GlamScene recently chatted with the lovely, charming, and ever-so-peppy Vanessa Branch. With a résumé that includes slapping Johnny Depp and chewing Orbit gum, we had quite a bit to gab about!
So, tell the truth, what’s it like to slap Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean At World’s End?
Basically, doing anything with Johnny Depp is right up my alley. And I’m the luckiest girl in the world. He’s the most incredibly nice guy in the world.
Do you have any funny stories from on the set of all three of the Pirates movies?
I think it’s just that we had such a good time doing it… We were – you know – up late nights drinking rum-punch, playing all kind of games. We had an Olympic day where we had relay races and sandcastle-building contests. It was just like little kid fun. Just all that kind of ongoing debauchery.
What’s it like wearing those period costumes?
Well it’s about 90 degrees in the Caribbean, and they weight about 25 pounds, and you’re cinched, and you have about four wool petticoats. So it’s really hot. It’s fun. It really puts you in character. But it’s really, really hot, and you have to stay still so you don’t faint, because a lot of people were fainting.
And Johnny’s actually was all wool, and I remember at one point we were shooting and we were looking around and he was like “Who smells like wet dog? What’s the wet dog smell?” And a little while later he realized “Oh my God! That’s me!” You know wool smells like wet dog. So… it’s challenging.
You’ve done a lot of movies, television, commercials… What’s your favorite?
Oh, God. That’s hard to say. I’ve had so many good experiences. I mean, I’ve been so lucky. I’ve really enjoyed so many different things. I mean Pirates was really like a little girl’s dream come true. And I love doing the Orbit spot that I do. We traveled all over the place for those. We’ve hit Sweden and Prague. And I just have another film coming out soon which is called All Roads Lead Home. It was shot in Kansas City and that was really a fun shoot to do.
You’re presenting an award at the MTV Movie Awards, right?
The Dirtiest Mouth Award. Well, it’s for Orbit gum. And I’m going to be presenting it as the spokesperson. It’s presented to the film that most needs its mouth cleaned. Basically, Jackass Two, Clerks Two, Smokin’ Aces, and Employee of the Month.
Do you get stopped on the street a lot? Do people recognize you as the Orbit lady? Do people approach you with a British accent, and ask you if you have a “Dirty Mouth” or anything crazy like that?
You know the funny thing is that nobody ever recognizes me – which is fantastic. And because no one recognizes me, it’s been really cult-popular. It’s like one of the best selling campaigns ever, and because of that everyone knows it. You ask anyone, they know it. And so frequently I’ll be in an airport ; I’ll be whatever near people; and there will be some gum. They’ll offer me some gum. I’ll be on line at a store they’re buying Orbit gum. People are always commenting on it while I’m around not knowing it’s me. And I find that really funny, because they’ll be talking about it; “yeah, that girl in the commercial is really funny,” and they’re telling this to me, not knowing it’s me. And I love that. I mean most of the time I don’t tell them, because I think it’s really funny. And sometimes I do, and then of course they kind of freak out, and then they want me to do the commercial which kind of embarrasses me. But I think it’s really funny that I could have a full conversation about the Orbit girl and no one knows it’s me. It’s like she’s a separate entity.
How long will it take you to get ready on Sunday for the MTV Movie Awards?
As long as it takes to make me look as good as humanly possible. Normally I would say hair and makeup for that is about two hours. But then like there’s the stuff before where you’ve got to get the manicure, you have to make sure your roots are done, and you have to get a spray on tan. It’s a whole big thing. You know you have to go meet with you stylist. There’s so much more that goes into it than people actually see from the other side. There’s a lot that goes into it. And then you have to make sure the dress is alright, and that everything looks good, and then touch ups when you get there. It’s a process.
What are you wearing?
Jessica Pastore styles all sorts of huge people and she’s great. And I have a very, very short dress… And it’s really cute and I’m very excited for it… Like the back is cut really low. And it still remains kind of classy and cute without going too far.
Who are your favorite fashion designers?
Ooo. Definitely varies. You know I love Max Azria couture. I wear a lot of that. And let’s see. Who else are my favorites right now. I like Stella McCartney. I love Marc Jacobs shoes.
What’s your secret indulgence?
My favorite food is bacon. I eat it all the time, so that’s sort of an indulgence, I guess. And I love getting massages.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Well, I speak Chinese, but that’s not really a hidden talent. It’s kind of out there. And I can turn my arm the whole way around so it looks like it’s on backwards… And probably my ability to eat bacon and pork grinds.
Favorite vacation spot?
Ooo, the Caribbean.
Favorite store?
My favorite store? Borders bookstore. I really like bookstores.
Book?
Oh. My favorite writer is Edith Wharton. And so pretty much any of her books. But I think one of the best books I’ve ever read is called the God of Small Things.
Movie?
My favorite movie is a movie most people have never heard of. It’s a movie called Legends and it came out in like 1985. Ridley Scott directed; it’s Tom Cruise’s first movie. It’s a fairy tale.
Word?
Papillion. It’s the French word for butterfly. My name means butterfly.
