Q&A with Chris Daughtry
GlamScene caught up with our sexiest rocker at Z100’s Zooptopia concert… Here Chris Daughtry dishes on life on the road; promotes his hot new album; and attempts to skirt around American Idol chitchat.
How does it feel to be ‘you’ post American Idol?
CD: Uh. I’m the same person now that was when I went into that. I knew what I wanted. And I knew why I went into it. I’ve been doing this ever since I’m 16. It was weird for me because I was always used to having a band behind me. So to go up there and be naked on stage was a little weird for me. So it’s more about people appreciating what I did and seeing where it went after that. So [my life] hasn’t really changed much other than people know who I am now.
How do you feel about your song [I’m Coming Home] being the theme for American Idol?
CD: It’s good. I mean. When we recorded it, and put the record out, the [American Idol] producers heard it and thought it would be good. So, it’s like… Why not?
Who are you rooting to win American Idol?
CD: Who ever wins.
Have you been watching this season of American Idol?
CD: Uh. We’ve been on tour since the end of January. So there’s not a whole lot of TV watching. So I’ve probably seen like three episodes.
Are you happy to be seeing Katharine McPhee tonight for the Zootopia concert?
CD: Haven’t seen her… But she’s a good friend on mine.
How do you feel about opening for Nickelback?
CD: Oh we’re stoked. They’re an extremely successful band and we’re honored to be a part of that. We can only hope that next year [at] this time we’re doing as well as they’ve done. I’m a fan. And it’s gonna be really cool.
Are there parts about being on tour that you don’t like? All the traveling, etc.?
CD: I don’t think there is… I mean when you’re doing something you love so much…What sucks is when I was washing dishes… Doing jobs that I absolutely hated, knowing that I could be doing something else, and I couldn’t do it. So now, there’s nothing to complain about.
How do you feel about rock becoming more mainstream… and being played on pop stations?
CD: I guess the population of people who listen to pop radio is a lot bigger than people who listen to rock radio, so it’s great that we’re able to be on both.
How do you prepare before you go on stage? Any rituals?
Band Member: Disco dancing, no!?
CD: They do a lot of dancing . I’m warming up. I don’t know… We do warm ups, we pray, we give each other a hug, we get on stage and we do what we do.
You gave Fergie a huge hug backstage earlier… Are you two close friends?
CD: Oh , you know Fergie and I go way back! (Laughing.) I met her at the Billboard Music Awards and she was really nice, so I said hello.
