Who: Debra Messing was a Burberry-clad beauty at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Purple Violets. With so many projects and premieres in her fabulous future, this red-headed looker had a whole lot to talk about!
What: A cute romantic comedy, set in good old NYC, Purple Violets is about two best friends, Debra Messing and Selma Blair, who run into their college sweethearts, Ed Burns and Patrick Wilson. This casual meeting of former flames leads to a path of second chances.
Glam: Tell me about your role in Purple Violets?
DM: [I play a woman who] once had dreams of being very distinguished and successful. And she runs into, and reconnects with, her old boyfriend from NYU, played by Ed Burns. And it’s a film about having dreams when you are young and what happens when you don’t really go with the plan.
Glam: So what’s the message of this film?
DM: There are four of us: Selma Blair and Patrick [Wilson] and Ed [Burns] and each one of us has a different level of success. One is like a John Grishman success and then there’s me. And each one of us responds very differently, and I think it just makes you think about your level of courage, and how quickly you give up. And whether or not you’re willing to pick it up again at another time when you’re a little bit wiser.
Glam: So how did you get involved with this project?
DM: Ed just loved this part for me, and I’m very grateful. I had the time of my life. He wrote this part for me. That’s what he said. He may be lying. He told me while he was guest starring on Will & Grace. ‘I’m writing a film and I’m writing a part for you.’
Glam: Tell me about The Starter Wife.
DM: It’s about a Hollywood mogul and his wife. And we are the perfect couple and happily married. And I am just out of nowhere dumped. Divorced for a younger, thinner, prettier model. And so in six hours you sort of follow her journey. At 40 being a single mom for the first time, trying to get a career for the first time, dating for the first time. And also it’s about identity. She has spent her entire life supporting her husband each step of the way and making it possible for him to become this massive success. And when they separate and he walks away he took her self-respect with him. And the two-hour premiere is on May 31st on USA.
Glam: What do you prefer doing: television or movies?
DM: I like going back and forth. I think I like the story so that’s the first thing I look for. But each one challenges in a different way.
Glam: Will & Grace is over (sadly)! … And one would think you’d finally have some downtime. But you’re all over the place these days with Purple Violets, The Starter Wife, a role in Lucky You. How do you balance your work and motherhood and being a wife?
DM: It’s one day at a time. It’s wild. You know a month ago everything was just sort of calm and cool, and I was at the playground everyday. And now I’m at the Tribeca Film Festival with two films and The Starter Wife happening. So, you just have to deal with what what’s happening that day.
Glam: What’s your ideal day off? How would you spend a relaxed Sunday?
DM: My ideal Sunday? I’d sleep in. Get the NY Times. Read it in bed for a little while. Go for a late brunch and hang out with my family and friends. Maybe go to the park and then go catch a movie.
Glam: How do you keep in touch with the Will & Grace gang?
DM: I just saw Eric on Friday in L.A. And I spoke to Sean on Friday. And Megan called me on Friday. So we do phone and email. We’re very much on each other’s minds and it’s a priority for us to stay in touch.
