A family member was recently diagnosed with cancer. I started doing what I imagine most of us do when we’re touched with severe illness and scary diagnoses–I started to look for advice and help. Jessie Gruman, founder and president of the Center for the Advancement of Health, talks to the New York Times about what to do when you (or someone you love) is faced with such a diagnosis. Gruman provides advice for the first 48 hours, how to enlist help, and what to do at the doctor’s office - including taking someone with you.
Aftershock: What to Do When the Doctor Gives You–Or Someone You Love–a Devastating Diagnosis
I also found lots of helpful information about cancer on the Cancer Commentary blog and a post from Well Past 50 on Caring for a Sick Spouse, Partner or Parent.

Those are all great resoures. I am a cancer survivor who has lost some of my closest family members to cancer. I an tell you that the stress is a good thing when it spurs you to action. You can’t control this, but you can understand it. That, is worth a lot.
