YogaGumbo provided me with an entertaining yogic diversion this afternoon. A lot of the answers for the questions on this quiz didn’t quite fit me, but I was entertained nonetheless:

By the way, I am supposed to be doing my yoga home practice right now…not such a balanced Yogi at the moment.
But while I’m at it, I can’t resist sharing a few other good excuses not to do yoga or work or whatever you were doing before you read this post:

what is yoga
Nirmal | 09-Jan-08 at 3:48 pm | Permalink
Gigi, Yoga started out as an ancient breathing, excerise posture system to better health, and was believed to have spiritual, energizng, calming, and other health benifits in India. Nowadays, it’s become a stereotyped attempt for western culture yuppies to feel ’spiritually connected’ and stuff. We Indians both laugh at and feel disgraced at how the western world has taken our ideas and marketed them in such a sad, strange, and materialistic, false way. When I have the urge to do yoga, I follow Swami Ramdev only. Or my uncle who is an Ayurvedic doctor.

Hello Nirmal,
Thank you for your thoughtful post. I can really appreciate what you’re saying about the American version of yoga. It is not the same yoga that is practiced (and has been practiced for centuries) in India. I’m so happy to hear that you mention Ramdev. While in India last week family friends were telling me all about him, but I seemed to keep missing his time slot on t.v. Are there books or videos of his that you might recommend for those who are looking for more of the traditional elements of healing and spirituality from India?
Thank you, Gigi, for raising the question.
