The Well: Plan A Wonderful Surprise!

On Thursdays we take you back to “the well”, your source for inspiration and how-to’s.

surprise.gif

I can’t wait for this weekend! It’s not going to be just any old weekend… this weekend I’m planning a surprise.

My family is planning a big party for Saturday and I wouldn’t miss it for the world. But they are far away and attending the party is not so simple. It requires getting time off of work, rearranging my schedule, and purchasing a ticket, not to mention all the traveling. I knew it would all be worth it, but I decided to have a little fun with it too.

Being the crafty gal that I am, I decided to plan a surprise. I told my family that I was, unfortunately, unable to come to town due to work, and that the timing was just not right. Meanwhile, I was nearly bursting at the seams knowing how great the surprise would be.

Once the plan was in action, I realized how many positive emotions are involved in the act of surprising someone:

*Excitement – The anticipation of “the surprise” gives you something to look forward to at any given moment. Having a sweet little secret can help get you through just about any day. And when you finally do surprise someone, they get to share in the delight of the excitement too!

*Joy
– The act of a fabulous surprise allows the situation to resonate with joy, love, and happiness. It gives both parties a very meaningful and loving experience.

*Appreciation
– A surprise allows both parties to truly appreciate one another and it gives you a chance to honor your unique relationship.

*Warmth and Fuzziness
– The recipient of a surprise is a lucky person, indeed. All the thought and effort put into a surprise on their behalf will make them feel extra special.

Make life more enjoyable with an unexpected surprise. Try it sometime; surprise a loved one with a gift, extra attention, or even your presence. It’s sure to make their day.

-Michele

An Ode to Oats

ode-to-oats1.gif

Oh, the oat: nourishing, cleansing, and oh so tasty!

Are oats a staple in your home? Well they should be; and I’ll tell you why. Oats are one of those amazing multi-purpose superfoods that support a glorious lifestyle in many different ways.

  • First of all, have you had an oatmeal-raisin cookie? Oye! Those babies are sure to put a smile on your face. Oats help make a lot of other tasty treats, such as oatmeal, granola, pancakes, breads, and some even find their way into veggie burgers.
  • The second reason to have oats in your life is because they’re good for you! Oats are whole grains – the good kind of carb that is essential in a balanced diet. Oats contain soluble fiber, which absorbs LDL’s (the bad cholesterol), and they reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Lastly, oats aren’t only great in your body, they’re great on your body as well. Oats are used in many beauty care products as a natural exfoliant and skin cleanser to remove dirt, makeup, and excess oil. Check out this simple mask made of oatmeal for a great home remedy. Oats help soften and soothe the skin and are even used to treat more serious skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.

Stock your pantry with these modest little gems - they are absolute miracle- workers on your taste buds, in your body, and on your skin!

What is a Neti Pot?

A neti pot is handy little device born in India that has been used in traditional yoga and ayurveda to help clean and clear the nasal passages. It can be particularly helpful for those with sinus congestion, allergies, asthma, common cold or irritation in the nasal passage (from dirt, molds, dust, dander, etc). In India it has been used as a routine way to cleanse this part of the body and improve breathing. A neti pot looks a bit like a small teapot. Someone in the family stored mine among the rest of the tea pots (and why not, right?). I grinned when I found it there.

To use:
1) Fill the pot with lukewarm water (approximately 8 oz)
2) Add 1/4 teaspoon non-iodized salt and stir until it is dissolved in the water. Note, the water should have the same level of saltiness as tears. Too much salt could give a slight burning feeling.
3) Tilt the head slightly to one side (over a sink) and pour the salty water into one nostril. Breathe through the mouth. The salt water will come through and out the other nostril.
4) Repeat on the other side.
5) Exhale several times out the nose and blow the nose to remove any remaining water, mucous, etc.

Here’s a great video demonstration:

Voila! You now have a natural remedy to relieve and cleanse your sinuses.
