If you are not yet familiar with the brilliant works of Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy, I urge you to go quickly to the nearest bookstore and head straight for the art department. It might just change the way you look at the world.
My love affair with Andy Goldsworthy’s work began years ago after setting my eyes on this book: Andy Goldsworthy: A Collaboration with Nature. Page after glorious page of awe-inspiring photos revealed to me the beauty of nature in a totally new and unsuspecting way.
Goldsworthy creates art using “found objects” from nature, such as ice, stones, sticks, leaves, bark, twigs, and clay. His approach is to interrupt or reshape nature to produce fragile, mutable pieces that change with time and the elements. His art becomes all the more beautiful as they are subject to the destruction of nature, sometimes within minutes, and remembered only in memory and photographs.
After reading his books and watching his documentary, Rivers and Tides, I am forever changed at the way I look at the world. I would highly recommend any of his books, and also the documentary. He is a master of inspiration.
