Zen-Fully In the Moment

Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed with too much to fit into a 24-hour day? Sometimes it can be stressful just thinking about everything that has to get done. At times like this do you ever wonder, “How am I going to get myself through all of this?”

Well, fear no more – there is a solution. Through a practiced combination of self-awareness and being present in the moment, you can experience the calm and glory of Zen. And the only thing it requires is your presence.

Zen is a type of Buddhism that has been practiced throughout the centuries in many countries, particularly in India, China, Japan, Vietnam, and Korea. The practice consists of letting go of self-consciousness and judgmental thinking, while keeping a mindful acceptance of self. It is the art of doing everything fully and completely with your mind in the here and now.

The sublime state of Zen is achieved through its meditative form, Zazen (literally, “seated meditation”). Zazen is performed to calm the body and the mind, allowing for a peaceful journey toward Zen. Through this practice, you can experience the nature of existence that ultimately leads to enlightenment.

To practice Zazen, begin by seating yourself in the correct position:

  • Start in a seated position with your legs crossed (full lotus is best)
  • Keep your spine straight but relaxed
  • Place your hands together in a prayer-like position over the belly

(Note: You can sit anywhere, but finding a place with fewer distractions is beneficial for optimal results.)

Once you are in the Zazen position, relax, breathe, and allow your mind to go. There is no need to focus or concentrate on anything. A few minutes of blissful calm will allow for rejuvenation and will bring a fresh perspective to the stresses in your life.

Next time things get hectic, consider practicing Zazen. Just relax, be present, and enjoy your journey to enlightenment!
