“The Well”: Understanding Your Life’s Purpose

On Thursdays we take you to “the well”; your source for inspiration and how-to’s.

Do you ever wonder about your purpose in life? I do. I also believe that at a deep level our soul already knows our purpose and that the key to reaching that knowledge on a conscious level is to find a way to communicate with the soul. I recently met with Jeffrey Van Dyk, owner of the Practical Visionary (a professional life coaching company), who works with clients to help them discover their life’s true purpose.

Jeffrey believes that everything that is within us is divine – even the ego (the surface, reactionary, and conscious part of the psyche) which may sometimes be misdirected. Your ego may have guided you to a career as a hard-working executive to obtain wealth and prestige, while your soul and your purpose lie in musical or artistic expression. Although we often follow and respond with our ego, is not who we are; it is merely one part of us. To discover our life purpose, we must dig deeper.

Jeffrey explains that the ego has two basic needs: protection and survival. If we take care of these basic needs, then our egos will not need to act out in strange and “interesting” ways (i.e. self-defense mechanisms, such as denial, repression, and fantasy). Once a client’s ego is honored and tended to, the client subconsciously opens a gateway for communication with the soul.

Before communicating directly with the client’s true soul, Jeffrey’s obtains permission from the ego to talk with a client’s “trusted source.” This source can be anything, ranging from a part of the client, a relative that has passed, God, the Universe, or anything else that the ego deems trustworthy). It is this trusted source that bridges the gap between the soul and the ego. Once Jeffrey has the ego and the soul communicating comfortably, he is able to reach the client’s soul directly. This is where all the magic happens, and where he is able to discover the client’s true life purpose.

If you have yet to discover your purpose, a Life Coach could be a remarkable asset for you. Working with a coach, you’ll come away with a true (and detailed) life purpose! A coach will also work with you to discover the best vehicles in your life to support that purpose. It might just change your life.
