In today’s Wellness 101 we bring you Qi Gong…
The other day, a friend and I were discussing various types of complementary exercise and stress reducing techniques. The second she mentioned qi gong, my ears perked-up. I had heard of the Chinese practice before, but I didn’t know much about it. Eager to learn, I asked her for the scoop.
Qi gong originated in China over 5000 years ago. The Chinese word “qi” can be translated as “energy” or “life force” while “gong” translates to “work” or “skill.” Hence, qi gong is the skill of attracting vital energy. It is an ancient, self-healing art of balancing and strengthening one’s life force.
The practice of qi gong consists of mediation, relaxation, and breathing exercises combined with static and/or dynamic exercises. Together, these actions focus on unblocking “clogged” energy channels for a healthy mind, body, and spirit. qi gong is used to treat disease, enhance overall well being, and strengthen the immune system. Benefits also include greater flexibility of joints, ligaments, and tendons, as well as calmness and mental clarity.
After discussing qi gong with my friend, I decided to see if I could find a teacher around town. Sure enough, I went online and found tons of classes and practitioners. Today in the US and around the world, millions of people practice this ancient Chinese art. It has become a popular form of stress reduction and health maintenance for millions. Begin your journey to better health, and find a practitioner today.
