Wellness 101: Feng Shui for Beginners

In today’s Wellness 101 we bring you Feng Shui…

I was first turned on to Feng Shui after attending a small and informal get together a few months ago. A friend of mine invited a Feng Shui consultant to speak to the group and she showed us how the practice of placement can affect and improve our lives. Enthralled by what I learned, I immediately went home and began cleaning up my room to prepare for the big change. But there was so much to understand (and so much to clean) that it took me longer than I expected to get my room in order. But, as I have the chance to read a bit and gather information I am able to clarify things in my own mind, and my room has *finally* begun to take shape. Sooooo, I figured this would be a great time to share some of what I’ve learned.

Arranging a space in a certain way with care and intent can maximize (or minimize) the flow of positive energy (chi) within it. Feng Shui is an art of placement that utilizes this concept, bringing a sense of belonging to a location. It is a holistic system of connecting to the earth’s rhythm, generating harmony, prosperity, and happiness.

After centuries of studying nature, Chinese scholars discovered patterns of life, which can be seen and understood in an octagonal wheel called the Bagua. The Bagua consists of 9 sections: career, knowledge, family, prosperity, reputation, love, creativity, luck, and health; 5 elements: water, wood, fire, metal, and earth; and 9 colors: black, blue, green, purple, red, pink, white, gray, and yellow. (Please note that the Bagua will be discussed in-depth in an upcoming post). To align with the forces of the universe, the Bagua must align with the space by the mouth of the chi, which is, most commonly, the entry door.

Once the layout of a space is understood, it may be arranged (or rearranged) in accordance with the Bagua. For instance, the middle section of the Bagua designates health through the element of earth, and the color yellow. One way to improve your health would be to place items representing the earth (clay pots, stone sculptures, a zen rock garden, etc.) in the center of your space, and to enhance it with or yellow/earthy colors. This will attract and hold the chi. Anything that helps enhance the chi of an area is considered a “cure” or an “activator.” In addition to colors and elements, some commonly used activators are crystals, heavy objects, plants, rocks, mirrors, and chimes.

Of course, you can arrange and rearrange all you want (pile rocks, light candles, and hang chimes), but it is only when you back your actions with faith and intention that you truly participate. This is the secret to Feng Shui. Once you have your cure, you must visualize your intention, state it clearly, and offer your faith.

Feng Shui establishes an exchange of energy between yourself, your environment, and the universe. It facilitates opportunities, harmony, and prosperity. So go ahead – move your stuff and change your life!
