Kick-Start Mondays: Time for Change

On Mondays we share our ideas to help you kick-start your week!

butterfly.jpg

I heard a powerful quote the other day that keeps coming back to me:

“You will never become the person you wish to be
if you remain the person you are.”

Pretty deep, huh? Anytime I find myself in a rut, I mentally return to this quote. Inspired, I ask myself what kind of person I want to be and respond accordingly.

Allow difficulties to be a jumping point for growth. Discover who you really want to be, then find your wings and change.

Eco-Friday: A Trip to the Farmer’s Market

TGiF! Enjoy this week’s eco-friendly tidbit…

fm_bread1.jpg

Yesterday, I treated myself to an afternoon at the Farmer’s Market. I strolled around, sampling and shopping in the fresh air. I bought fresh veggies for dinner (yellow corn and a plump tomato) and an orchid for my room.

Shopping at the Farmer’s Market is one of my favorite activities. Not only do I get to enjoy a sunny, outdoor shopping experience, meet local vendors, take lovely pictures, and eat delicious, organic food, I also get to play a role in an environmental and sustainable practice and support my local farmers.

This weekend, treat yourself to a trip to the Farmer’s Market and help keep them thriving! Happy Friday!

“The Well”: Thought-Provoking Lessons From Preposterous Movies

On Thursdays we take you to “the well” - your source for inspiration and how-to’s.

movie.jpg

How to Change the World is one of my all-time favorite posts (thank you, Rebecca). I remember when I first read the words “If you ask for courage, life brings you opportunities to be courageous”—I was struck by this simple wisdom and its relevance in every aspect of life. Then I laughed as I realized it was from the movie Evan Almighty—a movie about a Congressman who is followed by animals and instructed to build an ark for an upcoming flood…. yup! A silly movie with a powerful message.

The other night, I caught about 5 minutes of this movie (having never seen it before), and it just so happens that it was the exact part of the movie with the potent quote. Coincidence? I rewound it (thank you, Tivo) and listened again.

Two nights later, I found myself watching Enchanted, a movie about a Disney cartoon character who is tricked into entering the real world (aka New York City). Another silly movie, another deep message (spoiler alert): the thing that you seek is not always what the universe sends your way. So keep your eyes, ears, and hearts open and be ready to receive.

Makes me wonder if I should be watching more children’s movies….?

Au Natural: Mosquito Season – How to Beat the Bites! (Part 1)

Wellness on Wednesday is all about the natural you!

bug.jpg

The mosquitoes are out. I know this because I have a small, red, bump on my leg that begs to be scratched. I am a notorious favorite among the blood-sucking bugs—they always seem to pick me out of the crowd. But as of this moment, I am armed with the knowledge of how to beat the bite naturally—no chemicals (or DEET) necessary.

Over the next three weeks, I’ll give you all the information you need to know about how to naturally manage mosquito madness through diet, repellent, and healing (should one sneak past you). This week, we will focus on dietary changes.

As far as your diet goes, the three things to keep on your radar are: garlic, Vitamin B1, and salty foods. A diet high in garlic and Vitamin B1 will keep the pests as bay, while a diet high in salty foods will produce the same effect as ringing a dinner bell. So eat plenty of garlic, take your recommended dosage of Vitamin B1 (15mg. per 30 lbs. body weight), watch your sodium intake, and you’re good to go!

Next week: environmental adjustments. Stay tuned….

Editor’s Picks: Top Summer Songs

Enjoy this week’s Editorial favorites:

summer-songs.jpg

In case you missed yesterday’s post, I’m a sucker for the summer season. In fact, every time the word “summer” pops into my head it’s quickly followed by the chorus to Sublime’s Doin’ Time/Summertime: “summertiiiiime and the livin’s easy….” And it never fails to put me in a glorious mood.

To help everyone get in the groove for summer, I’ve compiled a list of cool tunes for those hot, summer days. Here are my top 10 songs of summer:

  1. Summer in the City – The Lovin’ Spoonful
  2. The Boys of Summer – Don Henley
  3. Summer of ‘69 – Bryan Adams
  4. In the Summertime – Mungo Jerry
  5. Summertime – DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
  6. School’s Out – Alice Cooper
  7. Under the Boardwalk – The Drifters
  8. Surfin’ USA – Beach Boys
  9. Summertime – Sublime
  10. Three Little Birds – Bob Marley

Any favorites you’d like to add?
