“The Well”: Awww… Silence

On Thursdays we take you to “the well” - your source for inspiration and how-to’s.

silence.jpg

From silence stems creativity, peace of mind, and inspiration, yet how often do you actually experience pure silence? Often times we feel we need to look outside ourselves for inspiration when really it’s right there inside of us. So, when you’re feeling lost in the world’s hum, seek out a quiet place and listen. You’ll be surprised what you hear. I think Virginia Woolf explains it perfectly in this passage from her novel, To The Lighthouse.

“And that was what now she often felt the need of-
to think; well, not even to think. To be silent;
to be alone. All the being and the doing, expansive,
glittering, vocal, evaporated; and one shrunk,
with a sense of solemnity, to being oneself…
When life sank down for a moment, the range
of experience seemed limitless.”

Au Natural: Mosquito Season - How to Beat the Bites (Part 3)

Wellness on Wednesday is all about the natural you!

aloe.jpg

If you’re a regular GlamSpirit reader, you know that I’ve been tackling the issue of mosquitoes for the last couple of weeks. In my first post of this series I offered tips on dietary changes, and in the second post I suggested some environmental adjustments that should keep those pesky mosquitoes far away from your delicate skin.

Hopefully, you’ve remained bite-free this season. But if you were out-and-about without your citronella and happened to get a bite or two, never fear—we’ve got some natural remedies to help you out:

Aloe Vera: Apply the gel from this plant directly to the bite to reduce itching, swelling, and inflammation. Aloe vera is a natural healer and once applied to a bite it forms a protective layer to reduce your chances of infection. The plants require minimal care and can be grown indoors when placed in bright, indirect light, so they’re great to have on hand!

Baking Soda: Add just enough water to a teaspoon of baking soda and mix together to form a paste. Apply paste to the bug bite and allow it to dry. Once the water evaporates, the baking soda will become dried and flakey, and should be left on as long as possible to reduce itching.

Ice: The cooling temperature from ice reduces swelling and numbs the bite to relieve any itch. Apply an ice cube wrapped in a cloth, an icepack, or even a frozen bag of vegetables, directly to the bite.

Tea Tree Oil: Soothing and disinfecting, this miracle oil can be used for a variety of things, including calming and healing those itchy bites. Available at any health food store, simply apply a drop or two to the bite a few times a day. Be sure to store tea tree oil in a cool, dry place to maximize its potency.

Kick-Start Mondays: Sharing is Caring

On Mondays we share our ideas to help you kick-start your week!

fruit.jpg

When I walked into the Glam kitchen this morning, I was greeted by a fresh, lovely, organic fruit salad – yummmm! To what did we owe this fabulous delight? It turns out that one of our co-workers thought up the perfect solution to a long-time dilemma: what to do with the extra food that can accumulate when you live on your own? Share it, of course! “It’s not like I can buy just a handful of blueberries, so may as well make enough for everyone!” she explains.

What a thoughtful idea–thank you, Denise!
