On Thursdays we take you to “the well” - your source for inspiration and how-to’s.
Let’s try a 2-minute experiment. Sit up straight and tall (and relaxed) in your most confident posture. Let every part of your body exude confidence and reflect it by the manner in which you are now sitting.
Now, keep this posture (don’t change it) and think of a fearful thought.
Pretty difficult, isn’t it?
Now let go of your confident posture and think of that fearful thought. Give in to the emotion of fear. What had to change? Did you shoulders slump? Did your head fall forward? Did your chest cave in or stomach tighten?
Go back to confident posture again to tune into the difference.
The purpose of this exercise is to illustrate how posture can be preventative medicine. The more you’re able to keep a confident and relaxed posture, the less likely you’ll get thrown off, upset or defensive throughout your day.
Simple, right?
Easy to do? Not always.
Step one: Pay attention to your posture as much as possible each day this week.Put a post it on your monitor at work to remind you.
Step two: Each time you catch yourself slumping remember your confident posture and snap into it immediately.
Step three: Let us know how it goes. (because we love comments)
