Opening the (He)art

embodyingart.jpg

I recently went to an art therapy presentation and learned about art as a form of meditation and healing. Linda Shanti McCabe is an art therapist who works with recovering addicts, alcoholics, and women recovering from eating disorders and body image issues. I think she’s amazing! Within one short presentation she helped me to hear my heart and gave me the confidence to draw what I was feeling. She led the group through a short meditation focusing on the heart and then passed out paper and pastels so we could draw. I am definitely not an artist, but it felt so good to express my thoughts in color. Afterwards, we wrote down what the picture said to us when we looked at it and what our heart said when we listened. This simple exercise can be practiced at home whenever you’re feeling down or stressed. Don’t worry about what your drawing looks like, just let your heart guide your pen.
