On Thursdays we take you to “the well” – your source for inspiration and how-to’s.
“Wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete?” If you know coming words: “Wouldn’t you think I’m a girl… A girl who has – everything?” then you, too, are a fan of The Little Mermaid. Well, last night I had the unique opportunity to attend a sing-along to this Walt Disney classic. Yes, you heard right. All week long, hundreds of die-hard Little Mermaid fans have been gathering together at San Francisco’s famous Castro Theater to belt their hearts out to one of the most adored movies of all time.
Talk about freeing your inner child! Not only were theater-goers encouraged to dress as their favorite character, but everyone was given a Little Mermaid goody bag at the door. In each bag, we found a pearl necklace to wear around our necks, a crown to place atop our heads, a glow stick with which to conduct the “choir” (along with Sebastian), a “dinglehopper” to comb our hair, bubbles to blow during Ariel’s first bubble bath, a clicker to clack as Sebastian scuttled along, and a popper to pop just in case the lovely couple should kiss. Fans were asked to unleash their creativity during the movie in all sorts of engaging ways, including singing along during the songs, shouting warnings of imminent danger, and booing at the evil Ursula.
Once the movie started, the audience came to life. We hooted and hollered, cheered and jeered. And at more than one point, we even danced our way up to the front of the stage! I left the theater that night with a childlike giddiness, a huge, silly grin on my face, and gratitude for the opportunity to unleash my inner Ariel!
