Have you heard of Oakland Food Connection? It’s a non-profit organization working to integrate food, community, and culture in the city of Oakland. What a brilliant idea! The organization focuses on teaching people the importance of localized, organic food.
Its Unity High “Live” program works with high school students to maintain an 18 garden bed food system where they can grow food to share with their families and the community.
Starting this January check out the Purple Lawn Cafe. This mobile food booth will be stationed at the Oakland Farmer’s Market. Here you will find high school students cooking up delicious dishes made from fruits and vegetables sold from vendors around the marketplace.
If you’re looking to start a garden, but not sure how to go about it, they can help. The organization has put together a garden work force, consisting of high school students, who work to build gardens around Oakland.
Why doesn’t every community have a program like this? Wouldn’t it be great if we all knew how to grow our own food? If you know of anything like this going on in your community, or if you want to get something started, feel free to share your ideas. It’s time to grow!
