The Well: Need a Pick-Me-Up? An Exercise to Cleanse Those Pesky Psychic Toxins

On Thursdays we take you to “the well” - your source for inspiration and how-to’s.

Why so down? Did your co-worker point out that teensy mistake you made in front of your boss just to make you look bad? Did your boyfriend cancel with you at the last minute for no good reason? Did your older sister give you an earful about the time your little one spilled juice on her carpet? (It’s an honest mistake!) Negativity, anger, and rudeness are all psychic toxins, and they can do just as much harm to your emotional state as air pollution can to your health.

When those tough hits come your way, it’s best to clear them out quickly so they don’t sit and fester, taking you down with them. An easy and fabulous way to do so is with this cleansing exercise I learned from shamanic practitioner Dr. Steven Farmer:

  1. First of all, kick off your shoes. If you can, step outside – it’s best to connect with the earth. However, if you’re stuck indoors, no worries – this exercise can be done anywhere.
  2. Next, stand up nice and tall with your feet about shoulder width apart, keeping your body nice and relaxed.
  3. Close your eyes and take a deep breath.
  4. Take two more.
  5. Imagine a pitcher of crystal, clear water directly above you. Gently, tip the pitcher and let the endless supply of water pour down through your crown chakra and throughout your body.
  6. Notice as it washes through you: through your mind, your neck and spine, down your arms to your fingertips, through your torso, and down your legs.
  7. When the water reaches your toes, let it flow out into the earth. You may notice that the water at your feet is a bit murky. That’s good. The earth takes this in and transforms it into the beauty of nature.
  8. Continue to breathe deeply and let the water fall easily through you, cleansing your mind, body, and soul. Do this for a few minutes or until you feel as clear as the water itself.
  9. When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes. Welcome back! You should feel refreshed and renewed, full of joy and able to let negativity bounce right off of you!

Try this exercise any time you need to, and at least once a month for maintenance. Keep positive and stay healthy!
