News from the California Women’s Conference

Hello from Long Beach! Rebecca and I have headed south for two whole days to cover the 2008 Women’s Conference, an event for women hosted by CA’s very own – and very empowered – First Lady, Maria Shriver. From the line-up alone, we can tell this is going to be big.

The Women’s Conference is an annual event held to inspire, connect, educate, and empower women to be architects of change in their own lives, in their communities, and around the world. This year we have the incredible opportunity to hear from some 70+ of the world’s top leaders (CEO’s, activists, politicians, entertainers, experts, etc.) who have paved their own paths. Some highlight include: Heidi Klum, Jennifer Lopez, Jillian Michaels, Bonnie Raitt, Rachel Ray, Condoleezza Rice, Gloria Steinem, and Marian Wright Edelman. To name a few.

Tonight we checked out the opening event: A Night at the Village. Maria Shriver herself kicked off the evening on the main stage. Along with a warm welcome, she shared her vision for the conference, and her hope for everyone. One thing she said in particular touched Rebecca and myself immediately (as we both grabbed our pens and notebooks to scribble down her quote). When discussing the goals, direction, and meaning of our lives, she said it’s not about asking what you should do, nor is it asking what the world needs; it’s about asking yourself what you love to do. As she stated so eloquently, “The world needs more people doing what they love.”

What a wonderful notion.

More updates to come tomorrow! Until then….
