Yoga for the Common Cold

yogi.jpg

The cold season is upon us, but before you head to the drugstore, consider yoga. A regular yoga practice will not only strengthen your immune system, but studies show that yogis avoid sickness more often than those who don’t practice. Whether you practice or not you will most likely encounter the common cold at some point this season. Yoga is the perfect tool to alleviate your symptoms and speed up the healing process. Here are a couple tips to help you out along the way.

Hummmmm
According to Dr. Timothy McCall, Medical Editor for Yoga Journal, the vibrations created by humming can open sinuses and relieve pressure. McCAll suggests chanting OM or practicing the pranayama technique known as Bhramari, which is done by pressing your lips together and buzzing like a bee.

Strike a Pose
Downward-Facing Dog- This inverted pose will increase blood flow to your sinuses and help ease congestion.

Cobra – This pose will open your chest and help prevent pneumonia.

Supported Bound Angle- This pose will open your chest and abdominal while relaxing your nervous system.

And might I add plenty of rest and a nice cup of tea. Feel free to share your own tips and tricks. Be well.
