Quit Compromising Your Health for the Sake of Chicness

Glam girls are stylish, sexy, and always in the know. In order to accomplish this, we need to have a natural sophistication, but that will only take you so far. We need some tools to make us our fabulous selves. But how much are these tools hurting, rather than helping?

Phone Usage

Carpal tunnel syndrome rates in young adults are increasing alarmingly fast. The culprit is frequent texting, facebooking, twittering, tinkering, and video game playing. According the Nielsan Company, young adults send about 80 texts daily. That coupled with the hours spent on the computer leads to pain, numbness, or tingling in the hands and fingers. Treatment usually includes splints, braces, anti-inflammatory medication injections, or in extreme cases, even surgery. Contact dermatitis is another risk caused by an allergic reaction to cell phone materials resulting in blistering of the skin. Texting while driving or walking is another serious health risk, for obvious reasons.

High Heels

Not even extreme pain can get us out of wearing our gorgeous stiletto pumps. The slimming and lengthening it does for our legs is worth the pain. Though, it may not be worth the long term health risks. Heels push our bodies forward which causes the spine to bend backwards to compensate, which results in lower back pain. Wearing heels also shortens the calf muscles; this could cause inflammation of the Achilles tendon which is extremely painful. Neuromas, otherwise known as benign tumors, can grow between the toes after long term high heel wearing, resulting in sharp pain, tingling, or numbness.

Manicures and Pedicures

Although we all love a fresh manicure and pedicure, unsanitary tools could cause fungal and bacterial infections. In order to prevent cross contamination, bring your own manicure kit to your salon. If that’s not an option, avoid procedures that break the skin, especially cuticle cutting. Also observe the salon; if it doesn’t look clean and sanitary, it probably isn’t.
