Waistline Woes: How to Survive the Holidays

tgivingWith the feast of Thanksgiving just around the corner, many of us are worried about wrecking our waistlines. Accustomed to trying every kind of pie? Piling food on your plate to get a taste of everything? We’ve all done it. But finding healthy ways to eat during the holidays, without sacrificing your festive feast experience can be done! Here are some tips on how to enjoy Thanksgiving with your loved ones without expanding your middle.

Don’t Skip Meals:
Skipping meals in anticipation of the big feast will only ensure that you overeat. By eating a regular breakfast and lunch, you can still enjoy your holiday celebrations without sacrificing all your hard work to stay fit.

Hors d’oeuvre Options:
Lets face it, Thanksgiving dinner is hardly ever served on time. The turkey isn’t quite done, and there’s always a guaranteed kitchen mishap that slows down the process. While you’re waiting, and staring at cheese spreads, chips, crackers and the like, opt for veggies to hold you over until dinner. Raw vegetables are a great source of fiber which will also help you detox after your meal.

Curb the Cocktails:
Alcohol is packed with calories that can derail the work you’ve put into counting your daily calorie intake. With the spirit of the holidays, and being surrounded by our loved ones, we often tend to reach for a glass of wine or cocktail more often than we should. By rotating between a serving of alcohol and a serving of water, you are more likely to drink less, not to mention feel better in the morning!

Spoon Rule:
When you’re traveling down the banquet line, you probably want to try a little bit of everything. Instead of piling food on your plate, try the spoon rule. A spoonful of each dish will ensure that you get a taste of everything, without over indulging.

A Piece of Pie
One piece of pie is really all you should reach for. Make the commitment to stick with one serving of only one dessert and your midsection will thank you in the long run.

Enjoy your friends and families, and have a happy, healthy holiday!
