Life Unscripted: What is 5 Rhythms Dance?

Wellness 101:
In today’s Wellness 101 we bring you 5 Rhythms Dance…

Have you ever lost yourself to the rhythm? I become ecstatic when I see a small child bounce around the room–free to move and express themselves as they tune in to the music. I am envious. Why is it so hard for most of us adults to just get up and dance? One great way to let go of all the mind chatter and just cut loose is through a practice called the 5 Rhythms.

5 Rhythms is a form of improvisational dance. Teachers of this practice guide a class through 5 different types of moving expression: flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness.

Gabrielle Roth, founder of this practice, talks more about it below. I love how she describes the droning critical voice in our head, and learning to “Drown that voice out with the beat…”

I first discovered the 5 Rhythms at Esalen Institute in California. It is practiced regularly in the morning movement classes. As someone who has experienced her format, it is fascinating to explore the boundaries of your own self through dance and become a witness to your own life experience. Au Natural: Spirulina – An Extrordinary Superfood

Wellness on Wednesday is all about the natural you!

spirulina1.jpg

After a month or two of pretty poor eating habits (i.e. cake for dinner and a breakfast that didn’t exist) I felt myself feeling lethargic and drained. I also felt stressed and rushed, making it difficult to stop and prepare a nutritious meal. I knew I wasn’t getting the nutrients I needed on a daily basis, but I was stuck in a difficult cycle. I needed a boost, but it had to be simple, easy, and accessible.

By chance, I happened to hear about spirulina. Not that I hadn’t heard of it before, but I had never really given it much thought. It seemed, however that it could potentially be the answer to my problem. I decided to test it out.

Hailed as a “superfood” by health advocates, this blue-green microalgae is often mistaken as a supplement. In fact, it is a food – and a whole food at that! Available in tablets, flakes, or powder, a dose of spirulina is a simple way to increase your protein intake and feed your body essential vitamins and nutrients. Spirulina contains as much iron as beef and is the only vegetable that packs a healthy does of vitamin B12. In addition, this powerhouse of goodness is loaded with calcium, magnesium, beta-carotene, zinc, and is a proven anti-oxidant.

Spirulina has qualities that address overall health. In addition to providing nutrients essential to the body, spirulina can also help reduce cholesterol, increase mineral absorption, keep blood sugar in-check, and boost immunity. It has even been said to have antiviral and anti-cancer attributes.

So, this superfood is superfantastic, right? Yes! But, a word of caution: skip the powder and go straight to the tablets – this stuff ain’t exactly chocolate cake. As for me, I’ve been taking the tablets for about a week and I’m already starting to feel better. I’m getting my nutrients and taking care of myself. The cycle has been broken, and I’m on my way to a happy, healthy body!

Spirulina can be found at any health food store and many stores online. Try it out for yourself!

10 Natural Ways to Strengthen Digestion

ns_logo_small.gifIn Ayurveda, the body is seen as a single integrated system in which all the parts work in tandem to create balance and health. The body’s ability to heal itself is its most significant quality, with healing defined as the process of the body returning to its natural functions. According to Ayurveda, the smooth operation of these functions forms the pillars of good health: effortless menstruation, regular elimination, restful sleep, and strong digestion.

Digestion plays a crucial role in healing, because our physiology depends on digestion for constant renewal. A holistic interpretation of digestion is to see it as the means of extracting intelligence from food and then processing it in a way that supports the inherent wisdom of the body as a whole.

Try these Ayurvedic tips to help ensure that your digestion is comfortable and efficient.

1. Eat in a settled and quiet atmosphere.
Try to set everything else aside at mealtimes to allow your body to concentrate on eating and digesting. When you put your attention solely on your meal, you are able to savor all the flavors with discernment.

2. Take a few minutes to rest quietly after your meal.
When you are finished eating, relaxing kick-starts the digestive process in an effortless way. A sense of calm before, during, and after mealtimes can be a major benefit to digestion and general health.

3. Always sit down to eat.
Sitting down relaxes the digestive tract, focuses awareness on the act of eating, and enhances your enjoyment of food.

4. Don’t eat when you’re upset.
Eating when you are emotionally unsettled can trigger gastrointestinal discomfort. If you’re upset at mealtimes, postpone eating until you feel more composed.

5. Avoid overeating.
Ayurveda suggests we eat only to about three-fourths of our actual capacity. Eating beyond this point doesn’t allow the stomach to function properly.

6. Avoid cold foods and iced drinks.
Cold foods and drinks put out the digestive fire, inhibit our digestive enzymes, and numb our taste buds.

7. Don’t talk while chewing your food.
The acts of chewing and swallowing are what really allows us to deeply extract the flavor of our food. Talking while there is food in your mouth distracts you from what you are tasting.

8. Eat at a moderate pace.
This means eating neither too quickly nor too slowly. Getting into the habit of putting your fork or spoon down between bites helps set a steady pace.

9. Don’t eat until your previous meal has been digested.
Eating only when your stomach is calling for more requires a high level of body consciousness. For most people, complete digestion takes from three to six hours. If you have to snack, keep it simple—a piece of fruit or a warm beverage.

10. Favor meals made with freshly cooked foods.
Fresh foods are intelligent foods and contain the greatest life force. A delicious, freshly prepared meal stimulates the appetite and gets the secretion of digestive enzymes going even before you start to eat.

Wellness 101: The Feldenkrais Method

feldenkrais-ballerina.gif

Years ago, I met a ballerina named Sarah who had broken her ankle during a performance. She saw her doctor, who put her leg in a cast, and stayed off of her foot for weeks. Once she was able to walk again, she continued to have pain and a lot of difficulty dancing. She tried icing, resting, and a variety of clinical suggestions made by her doctor, but she was still unable to get her natural movement back. Sarah became frustrated; not only was it was affecting her dancing, but it started to affect her career. She began to feel hopeless.

Through a friend, Sarah heard about The Feldenkrais Method and decided to try it out. After weeks of one-on-one therapy and group sessions, Sarah began to regain her ability to move her foot correctly and became excited that she was back on track. Although it took several months, Sarah was eventually able to dance like she used to. She credited The Feldenkrais Method for allowing her to continue on with her career and to let it soar to new heights.

The Feldenkrais Method is an alternative approach to wellness. It is a technique which brings self-awareness through movement, mainly focusing on the nervous system. In general, people can develop habits, suffer illnesses, or have accidents that impede their body’s ability to function optimally. The Feldenkrais Method is designed to re-teach an individual how to move correctly for physical and emotional well-being.

There are two practices of the Feldenkrais Method: Awareness Through Movement (ATM) and Functional Integration. Awareness Through Movement is a series of movements that are taught in a group setting. The practitioner verbally directs students while they explore different ways to refine or change the way that they move. The idea is for the student to make a mind/body connection and to become aware of even the slightest change in their body movement. Functional Integration is a one-on-one approach where the practitioner directs the movement of a single patient. The patient sits on a low table while being gently guided through new, forgotten, or hindered movements. This is a very delicate, calming process meant to be nourishing and painless. The objective is to liberate the patient from old, destructive patterns and to ease them into a new, healthy system of movement.

If you suffer from an injury, the Feldenkrais Method may be able to help. For more information or to find a practitioner near you, check out the following sites:
