Friday Faves: Aveda Pure-Fume

TGiF! Enjoy one of our top picks in today’s Friday Faves…

pure_fume1.jpg

Aaaah, I love Aveda products. There’s nothing like the fresh, earthy aromas of their products. Their shampoos, lotions, soaps, and even their make-up smell fresh and healthy. Little did I know that they actually bottle these aromas and sell them as pure-fume! (And yes, I did spell that correctly).

As I was perusing the Aveda shop near my house I came across a display of aroma therapeutic oils and “make-your-own” perfume. Aveda calls it pure-fume because they use all certified organic oils and make everything with pure plant essences. You can purchase a pre-made scent, concoct your own individual scent, or you can buy the purest form of all, essence oil. All three pack a powerful punch and last all day long!

If you choose to stick with a pre-made pure-fume, Aveda will blend a fresh batch for you right in front of your eyes! That’s right, you won’t get a bottle that’s been sitting on the shelf for months. It’s all about freshness and purity. Creating your own pure-fume allows you to experiment as you find just the right combination for you. Finally, if you opt for the pure essence, you’ll love the potency of this stuff and be thrilled with its longevity.

You can choose scents based on personal preference and also on therapeutic qualities. Different scents can be used calm and soothe your nerves, enhance the ability to think clearly, and balance your mind and body. Choose from sixteen different scents, including rose geranium, lavender, vanilla, ylang ylang, and sandalwood.

I bought one of Aveda’s pre-made scents and mixed one of my own. I love them both! They seem to last much longer than traditional perfume and I get compliments all of the time. So, get out to the nearest Aveda store or shop online and find the perfect scent for you!

Kick-Start Mondays: Begin Each and Every Day at the Spa

On Mondays we share our ideas to help you kick-start your week!

morningspa2.jpg

If only! I’d guess that the majority of us have neither the time nor the $$$ to go to the spa every day. Luckily, you don’t have to go to the spa to feel like you’ve just been to one – you can also bring the spa to you!

Simply adding fragrance to your morning shower instantly turns a daily task into a blissful, indulgent experience. Equip your shower (and/or tub) with beautifully scented shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and body washes (shop carefully if you have sensitive skin). Energizing scents such as citrus, mint, and eucalyptus gently awaken your senses and encourage deep breathing for a relaxing yet invigorating start to your day. Top it all off with a fragrant lotion, essential oil, or perfume and you can carry your little slice of heaven with you throughout the day.

Whether you’re a morning person or not, this simple step will have you looking forward to your new A.M. routine!

Au Natural: Scents for Sleep

Wellness on Wednesday is all about the natural you!

sleep2.jpg

I’ve struggled for years with difficulties getting myself to sleep. Once I’m asleep, I’m out like a light; but getting to sleep, well, that’s another story. I know that there are millions of people out there just like me who are: 1) in need of a better night’s sleep and 2) would like to find a natural solution. Well, I’ve got good news – after a bit of research, I’ve found plenty of ways to help put an end to those sleepless nights.

It’s important, first, that we understand the causes of insomnia. Stress, caffeine, alcohol, poor diet, lack of exercise, and a disruptive daily routine can all contribute to poor sleep. A good place to start improving our nightly slumber is to change our current habits by exercising, eating better, avoiding stimulants, and leaning to relax. In addition to an adjustment in our day-to-day lives, we can also look to aromatherapy for help.

Aromatherapy is a form of complementary medicine that uses scents to alter our moods. How do the fragrances of Lavender, Sweet Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, Sandalwood, Clary Sage, and Jasmine sound? Gentle and calming? Indeed, they are – and the very scent of them can help lull you to sleep. Here is a brief description of each, including healing properties, effects, and scents:

Lavender – helps sooth and calm nerves, reduces tension, insomnia, headaches, and depression
Effects: Calming, Therapeutic
Scent: Floral, Sweet, Woody, Herbal

Sweet Marjoram – helps treat anxiety, headaches, and insomnia
Effects: Soothing, Warming
Scent: Warm, Spicy

Roman Chamomile – promotes relaxation, reduces excessive anxiety, and treats insomnia
Effects: Soothing, Relaxing
Scent: Sweet, Herbal, Fruity

Sandalwood – promotes relaxation, beneficial for depression, stress, nervous tension, and insomnia
Effects: Warming, Relaxing
Scent: Woody, Sweet, Exotic

Clary Sage – helps sooth, relax, and uplift the spirit
Effects: Warming
Scent: Sweet, Spicy, Herbal

Jasmine – helps sooth and relax, very beneficial for depression, insomnia, nervous tension, and stress
Effects: Soothing, Relaxing
Scent: Warm, Floral

All of these fragrances are readily found in the form of essential oils. Choose your scent (or find a good combination), pour 2 drops of the oil on a tissue, place it inside your pillowcase, and let the healing aromas gently waft through. A deep, restful sleep is essential in order for your body to restore and revitalize. Let these glorious scents help keep you healthy, relaxed, and sleeping wonderfully.

Wellness 101: Rolfing

In today’s Wellness 101 we bring you Rolfing…

rolfing-stones.jpg

Have you heard of Rolfing? Do you know what it is? For years I’ve heard this term tossed around, and I finally decided to investigate. Rolfing is a lot more involved than I expected, and, boy, does it sound amazing!

Rolfing is a technique that actually changes the structure of the body, bringing it into balance in relation to gravity. Over time, as our connective tissues tighten up in various ways, our muscles become restricted from functioning properly. We can end up with poor posture, difficulty in movement, and even injury. Through hands-on manipulation by a certified Rolfer, our connective tissue can be loosened and lengthened to bring our bodies back into proper alignment, thus freeing our bodies to move naturally and effortlessly.

A Rolfer literally stretches the tissues of the body, most often in a series of 10 sessions (a.k.a. the “10 series”). Each session focuses on a different area of the body in a specific order to bring harmony to the body and to produce optimal results. When Rolfing was first practiced, the manipulation was sometimes found to be painful, but over the past 50 years practitioners have found many ways to create a gentle, comfortable approach.

The benefits of Rolfing are far and wide. Rolfing enhances posture, vitality, and well-being. It can ease pain and chronic stress. It improves ease of movement and performance. It also provides an excellent foundation for and complement to other activities such as dance, yoga, and pilates.

If you’re interested in enhancing your vitality, easing chronic pain, or improving your posture, get your “10 series” on with a certified Rolfer now!
