Chic for Change

 maneater-threads.jpg

One of my favorite online shopping sites, ManeaterThreads.com, recently launched a program they call ‘Chic for Change’.  Every month they will be donating 5% of their sales to a different local or international nonprofit, with a focus (but not limited to) organizations that address women’s and children’s issues, the environment, animals, or international relief.  Thier beneficiary for the month of July is the American Refugee Committee, which provides humanitarian asistance and training to refugee communities and displaced people all over the world.  Tanya Zilinskas, founder of ManeaterThreads,  says ”I was drawn to  the ARC because of their work in Darfur, and I plan on giving to more organizations that assist in that region.  It’s truly disturbing what is going on there right now, and I think the more people who help with their money or their time, the better.”  Tanya also mentions, “I would really like the store to stand for more than jsut clothes, and when we have a good month, I want it to be a good month for someone else as well.”

Tanya, you rock!!!!  And so does her store, if you haven’t checked it out, definitely do.  She has an amazing eye and carries a perfect mix of designers including; American Retro, Jennifer Nicholson, Mara Hoffman, Mike & Chris, Fluet, By Francine, Rami Kashou, and many more.

Help make a difference!  ManeaterThreads.com

Big BBQ Buys from World of Good

As the summer months are fast approaching backyard BBQ’s are definitely on my mind. The one thing that I love buying is new and exciting backyard textiles, table top accessories, and anything else that catches my fancy. This year I’m thinking globally and you should too when buying accessories for the BBQ festivities. World of Good is a fair trade gift company that distributes great quality hand-made crafts and merchandise to many mainstream markets. There are so many wonderful products that are crafted by artisans to help sustain a means to support themselves and their families.

Here are some great finds that will definitely spice up your BBQ bash.colored-napkins1.gif

These colorful napkins are woven by the Cakchiquel people in a rural agricultural village in Guatemala. The sale of their products is used to send children to school. Cotton Candy Napkins

Moo-ve Over for Fair Trade Serving Set
These great salad tongs are crafted in the homes of artisans in the Ha Tay province in Vietnam and help create employment, reduce poverty and preserve cultural traditions. Moo-ve Over for Fair Trade Serving Set

Midsummer Light Candle Holder
Spread these candleholders around (put citronella in to keep pesky mosquitoes away) your backyard for a touch of elegance. This holder is crafted by teacher based in a small Bali village, who earns supplemental income for his family by handcrafting this unique design from real bamboo. Midsummer Light Candle Holder

Bamboolicious Bowl
Independent Vietnamese artisans in the Cat Dang Village craft them using a long tradition of hand-coiled bamboo. Great look and great for the environment! Bamboolicious Bowl

Nike, Good for the Sole

nike-reuse-a-shoe1.jpg

I love this concept!  Taking old beat-up shoes and turning them into playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, and athletic fields for kids.  Reuse-A-Shoe is a key component of Nike’s long-term commitment to waste elimination along with helping increase the physical activity of young people to improve their lives by reusing old athletic shoe material.

WHEN: May 17 - 30, 2007

WHERE: Niketown New York, 6 E 57th Street

WHY: Waste elimination and encourage more physical activity amongst kids
