Sharapova in her new Nike US Open dress
In the midst of the aforementioned fashion week planning, comes many a US Open event. Fortunately for me, nearly all those that I attend are style-related. Last night I made the trek to Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center’s alarmingly high/awe-inducing observation deck) for the unveiling of Maria Sharapova’s new Nike dress.
The defending US Open champion, fashion plate, and official tennis it-girl showed off her new sport frock (sprock?) to a roomful of curious photographers and editors, noting that the dress’s explosion of Swarovski crystals at the neckline echoes the shape of the New York City skyline. The scarlet version of the dress—in a bright red hue to further accentuate a Big Apple inspiration—was made for the night games, while a tamer black and white version is intended for Sharapova’s day matches. “I like simple things with special details,” she said of the dress’s design, “and I love that I can incorporate my ideas into these designs.” Considering this year’s style and the fact that last year’s version was modeled after the iconic little black dress Audrey Heburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Miss Sharapova would appear to be one cosmopolitan all-star. x S.C.
