Beauty and brains is a killer combination. When at today’s Erin Fetherston show, I couldn’t help but marvel at the SoCal-native’s remarkable prowess. Only a few short years in this fickle industry, the winsome Miss Fetherston has craftily nailed down an aesthetic unlike any of those seen before—just look at her soon-to-hit-stores Target line for further proof of her wisdom in knowing what today’s Sofia Coppola-worshiping girly-girls want to wear. Her latest line was fully of ‘40s-inspired pieces tempered with Fetherston’s distinctively light touch—think louche pant-suits, tailored high-waist shorts, pussy-bow blouses and of course, her diaphanous gowns. Her floor-grazers were even more refined than those we’ve seen before. A tiny bunch of pleats and a palette of cool greys can go a long way when climbing up the ladder of sophistication. Even industry darling and eclectic dresser Irina Lazaraneau, (who sat front row at pal Fetherston’s show, next to the designer’s fiance) pointed out the sweeping cream column dress as her favorite. And then there were the accessories; seashell clutches, white patent heels, and jewel-accented turbans—all of which came with a hint of vintage-feeling nostalgia yet charmed the crowds like only a new novelty can do. All this and she’s eloquent too. Just before her show, we popped into her studio to catch up with the designer. Click through to learn more about her thought process and inspirations, but do so at your one risk: Chances are that one glance may leave you feeling forever envious of the talented Miss Erin. x S.C.
