The thing about Paris fashion week is that even “bad” shows are good shows. (Very Important: For the purpose of this blog, “bad” shows = presentations by fashion labels that don’t have any celebrity spokesface.) Take Jefen, for example. I woke up early today to see the show as a P.R. friend of mine—who had woken up even earlier to help set up—asked me to come and check out. As I’d never 1) seen 2) heard about 3) known how to spell the Chinese label, I had no idea what to expect. Having previously navigated unfamiliar territory during other fashion weeks—from London to L.A., even Stockholm and Reykjavík—I must admit I was expecting The Worst, i.e. ill-fitting Balenciaga knock-offs, sloppily put together as if done by some art-school undergrad on cannabis. Trust me, there’s a lot of said “style” out there.
However, I am happy to report, not a scrap of sophomoric stuff was included in the Jefen collection. Instead, wing-shoulder leather jackets, flirty fur capelets, and boxy coats tailored out of lush cashmere filled the runway. Sure, these artful exteriors were paired with super-short flippy skirts but you could say the same of any big designer show—if you dared—but the bottom line is that everything was glossy, cool and wearable which is more than you can say for some other shows…
