Barneys New York and Disney Craft a High-Fashion Electric Holiday
By Valis Vicenty August 29,2012
Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Daisy are getting a high-fashion makeover this holiday season. The Walt Disney Co. collaborated with Barneys New York to include the classic cast of characters dressed by some of the world’s biggest designers for the retailer’s holiday campaign, Electric Holiday. According to Women’s Wear Daily, it is a play off of the animation company’s famous electrical parade in the form of a 3D electric light show. The window displays will also run a short film centering on Minnie’s fantasy of attending the shows in Paris, transforming the beloved characters into runway models – and all with a score from Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino. The store worked closely with the studio’s animators to ensure the cartoons’ restyling remained authentic to all of fashion’s idiosyncrasies, even animating 23 of fashion’s biggest forces like WWD’s Bridget Foley in the special Disney style. From to the designer clothes the Disney troupe would don, to the backstage area of a show, to the way the characters would walk the runway; no detail was left to chance. For the festivities, Minnie will wear Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, Mickey by Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga, Daisy Duck in Dolce & Gabbana, Snow White by Peter Copping for Nina Ricci, Princess Tiana in Proenza Schouler, and Cruella de Vil by Rick Owens. “What is really important in the film is getting all of the details of how that world works,” Barneys Creative Director, Dennis Freedman told the publication. “That was the real challenge and involved a whole education process.” This isn’t the first time the characters have undergone a fashionable revamp, as Minnie will be the focus of a project with several London designers, including Giles Deacon, Michael van der Ham, and Richard Nicoll while Cruella was among the baddies chosen for the Disney Villains Designer Collection. As part of the holiday revelries, Barneys will offer an exclusive collection for the campaign with Vinylmation figures designed by Diane von Furstenberg and Paul Smith; Mickey Mouse ears by Rag & Bone and L’Wren Scott; and stocking stuffers like ornaments, children’s toys, and candy. As the season gets closer, a charity will be revealed that will benefit from 25% of the sales of the limited edition products. With these iconic characters, Barneys is bound to top last year’s fan-favorite Lady Gaga’s Workshop! I likee the minnie, daisy, and goofy
they should put these iconic looks in the disney stores as well i would buy in a minute, watches, also or anything by walt disney i love mickey and minne and the rest of the disney characters, i grew up with those
First of all, Disney is not an “animation company.” Perhaps if you knew
anything about Disney, you would have referred to it as the biggest
“media company” in
the world. Disney disbanded it's eponymously-named animation
studio several years ago with all animated features/properties now
created/produced by its Pixar business unit. It will be interesting
to
see just how much the company allows Barney's to commit blasphemy
against its Disney Franchise
and Character Style Bible, such as permitting characters from different worlds to interact and hang out with each other (e.g., Mickey chatting with
Snow White), etc. And what's the point here?– to get Disney Store
customers to shop at Barney's or vice versa– that's like asking
Bergdorfs shoe shoppers to go to Nine West. Another stupid idea from
failed-upward execs… or they are banking on the fact that so many of
today's one-percenters come from low-brow origins and have no taste,
therefore the need to uptown their favorite Disney characters. Whatever the “thinking”, it's obvious these people are running out of fresh ideas.
cute :3
“The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress.” and neither will most people according to these fashion elitists. these images are appalling and I would hate for my daughter who is already skinny and very active to think that this body image is remotely acceptable let alone something to emulate and aspire to. Disney mantra for the last half century has bee “dreams can come true”. if they are now willing to whore their reputation and the images of their beloved iconic characters this way I would hate for any little girl to have this nightmare to aspire to. I HATE this idea and i HATE these images and I am disgusted that these decisions were made by Disney executives.
