Agyness Deyn For Moussy

Agyness Deyn models for Moussy campaign.

“There’s no one else out there who looks like her. She personifies joie de vivre. She can reflect what the designer wants but give it her own personality.” ~ Anna Sui, designer.

Japan’s uber-popular clothing brand, Moussy, just launched their new Autumn/Winter 2008 campaign! Model, It-girl, and fashion icon Agyness Deyn (pronounce “Dean”) was featured in the ad. The collection is straight out of LA’s 80’s punk rock scene and seems inspired by Deyn’s own wardrobe. The 5’10” British model first made a name for herself in 2006 and has exploded onto the fashion scene ever since. During the 2007 British Fashion Awards, she was named “Model of the Year”. She’s been on every sought-after magazine cover and runway show while signing lucrative advertising deals from Burberry to Galliano to Hugo Boss. Known for her unique and quirky style, cropped bleach blond hair, and Madonna-esq dark brows, this model-of-the-moment is being heralded as the next Kate Moss. As you know those are big shoes to fill and I’m not so sure that any other model can pull it off. On the other hand, if anyone could do it, it might just be Agyness. Her androgynous physic and daring personal taste is a refreshing change from the Gisele’s of the world. I love Gisele, and she’s stunning but Agyness has that j’ne sais quoi that elevates her to a different level. I can’t wait to see what else this hipster-fashionista accomplishes, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for her on the runways during New York Fashion Week! ~ Maria Denardo

Model Fights With Blouse…And Loses

model censored ferragamo fall 2008 runway

While New York fashion week had its fair share of platform shoe slip-ups (cough, cough Karen Elson), rarely does an inanimate garment get the better of our runway regulars. But in Milan today, a too-seductive separates threatened to interrupt a catwalker’s graceful gait: At the Salvatore Ferragamo’s show, a fresh-faced newbie wrestled, albeit unsuccessfully, with a silk jumpsuit. (Come si dice “bra tape”?) Meanwhile, her more fortunate peers strode down the runway in fuss-free thanks to SF’s new ’70s body-cloaking styles.

Sneak Peek: YSL’s Spring Manifesto

kate moss ysl manifesto spring 2008
Kate Moss in YSL’s Spring 2008 Manifesto

Milan runway scene is in full swing, but the fashion cognoscenti is withholding their enthusiasm (read: best outfits and most potent fete-going fuel) for next week, when the A-list models, editors, buyers, and hangers-on migrate to the City of Lights. To whet your appetite for what’s to come, take a sneak peek at round two of Yves Saint Laurent’s Manifesto.

First unveiled during the recent September shows, Stefano Pilati’s magazine-like publication will be distributed in London, Milan, New York, and (bien sur) Paris, before hitting Tokyo and Hong Kong, injecting a little dose of high fashion to sidewalks, subways, and streets. Coinciding with the launch, a public installation of life-size images from the Manifesto will land in select cities for one day only. (So keep your eyes peeled!)

While last season’s Manifesto starred Gisele Bündchen, the muse for this season’s Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin shoot is none other than Kate Moss herself. In the dream team’s photographs and film, Moss swans aroundFondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent in Pilati’s spring gear–complete with a mirrored star cuff. Surrounded by camera flashes, Kate shown peering in the glass window, a scene which resembles an inverted version of the model’s Top Shop window-dressing spectacle. Providing tantalizingly personal shots of her timeless highness, the YSL venture reminds us that whether we’re on the inside looking out or on the outside looking in, we’ll always be eager to watch Miss Moss. Alexander Wang Raises the Bar on Cool. Again.

Alexander Wang, Fall 08

Designer Alexander Wang would make one excellent DJ. With his finger on the proverbial downtown pulse—thanks in no small part to his age, a mere 24, and circle of taste-making friends—Wang knows how put a fresh spin on old-school favorites. Known for creating separates that suit the layered-on look of today’s ever-expanding ingénue pool, the Ecco Domani-sponsored designer offers plenty of daintily masculine separates and tough-girl clothes for fall. Dark vests of varying lengths, cool (yes, cool) boucle knits, and boxy tweedish jackets were made available in a palette of graphite, beige, and rich, inky black. Edgy biker jackets and leather pants were streamlined into clean silhouettes, left retaining only a whiff of their rebellious origins. Likewise, grunge-era staples like rolled tees, ripped tights, and sock hats seemed refined when paired with fur clutches and cashmere knits, all of which played well to the crowd.

Here’s a few names to add to fashion week’s VIP list: ’90s greats Guinevere von Seenus, Amber Valetta, Shalom Harlow, will join Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam and today’s other top catwalkers at the FashionFuture show. Hosted by the forward-thinking folks at Barneys New York, the runway presentation will feature eco-friendly threads from Bottega Veneta, Calvin Klein, Derek Lam, Marc Jacobs, among other favorites. Stay tuned for the verdict on which of the shows inspiring visions (the girls or the garments) are more beguiling.

Ford Models SuperModel Search: The Runway Lesson

In just a few short hours Ford Models‘ international supermodel search will come to a brilliant end. Tonight the 21st annual competition–where Ford folks travel to the ends of the early to find the next catwalkers and scene-stealers–concludes, and one lucky girl will be declared the winner, scoring a $250,00 Ford contract as part of her fashionable booty.

This competition of long limbed beauties isn’t all hair blow-outs and beauty sessions though: It’s about mastering the finer points of being fashion’s postergirls.

Earlier this week I dropped in on the girls’ runway walking lesson. (Ford’s charismatic CEO and pioneer of the industry, Eileen Ford herself was there eyeing the young candidates.) Among some of the many informative morsels strut coach to the stars, Matt Folkes doled out were “You have to make me want to be you!”, “To get wind in the hair, step with feeling!” and “Your eyes should be filled with sparkle and shine!”–the latter of which many grumpy, New York sidewalk-stepping residents would to well to take cues from.

You can catch a glimpse of the events fashion show extravaganza and find out who the winner is by checking back here and Fordmodels.tv, but you can only see the catwalk crash-course here.

Kate Bosworth Follows in Kate Moss’s Footsteps

kate bosworth calvin klein
Kate Bosworth for Calvin Klein Jeans

Today WWD announced that Kate Bosworth will be the new face of Calvin Klein Jeans come spring, a post–the piece seemed to suggest–she earned by consistently attending CK events. Surely Bosworth’s lithe frame played some part, because if good front-row attendance was the only requirement for such glamorous gigs, there’d be many more fashion week regulars on Times Square’ billboards, no?

Also, if you’re interested in the image & trend-making machine CK Inc, you might want to sear the name and face of Tonni Garrn into your mind. The 17-year-old German stunner is working exclusively with the house that Francisco Costa is re-building.

Lagerfeld Shakes Up London

kate moss karl lagerfeld
Kate Moss & Karl Lagerfeld

There are few indisputable truths in the fashion world: That Black is always in is a classic. That Kate Moss can do no wrong nor ever look bad is pretty irrefutable. That Tights are not pants is another favorite. And there’s the unofficial yet unanimous agreement that Karl Lagerfeld is the best party-promoter on earth.

In a move that maintained his soiree status, the Chanel designer parked his tweed-covered party bus in London yesterday, showing his couture-like “Métiers d’Art” collection to the fashion set’s upper crust. After the runway show, Chanelophiles piled into Nobu to fete the French label and the enigmatic German who helms it. The gathering was less tea-and-crumpets and more tempura-and-champers, and when guests’ elbows weren’t plopped on the table (Emily Post is currently on her 166th rotation in her grave) they were rubbing up against their fellow fashion VIPs.

As per usual, the glitterati—which included current CC postergirl Claudia Schiffer, Mario Testino, Natalia Vodianova, and the pretty, pint-sized Emma Watson—greeted the designer’s arrival as the second coming of Coco herself. The dress code was—for those lucky souls who have the Chanel PR # on speed dial—black, white, and Karl all over. Except for Tom Ford that is; the designer wore himself, which sounds complicated, but to be truthful, was really quite chic.

Style Snapshot: Esther Cañadas in LaCroix

Esther Cañadas lacroix
Esther Cañadas presents the new Lacroix bridal collection, Madrid November 12

Merci Monsier LaCroix, merci! Thank you for designing those totally affordable (and quintessentially French) frocks for LaRedoute this season. And grazie for designing completely over-the-top couture gowns for the past two decades—and I know Kiki appreciates it too. But most of all, a million thanks for tracking down the bodacious Esther Cañadas and putting her in this completely fantastic, Barbiefied wedding gown of yours.

dkny adI loved her in those DKNY ads with her now ex-husband Mark Vanderloo, was thrilled by her mute cameo in 1999’s Thomas Crown Affair, and have been missing her I’m-so-not-amused pout ever since. Here’s hoping we’ll see more of her on this side of the pond.
