Glam Chats With Jordin Sparks

This bubbly and sweet 17-year-old is deceivingly mature. (And her music is sophisticated beyond her years too). Jordin Sparks blew us away as the adorably dimpled teenager with the incredibly powerful voice on American Idol. Glam chatted with the bubbly and gorgeous girl about the upcoming release of her self-titled album.  We touched on her favorite songs, her Thanksgiving plans, and her holiday wish list…

Tell me about the process of creating your first album.
It was crazy because I had a really short amount of time to work on it, and I was doing a tour while recording at the same time, so that was kind of intense. So at the end of the tour I had about a month time to get stuff recorded. So I was up in New York for about a week and then I was in L.A., and I was in the studio 24/7 recording and getting stuff done. So I guess around the first week of October I had about 20 songs finished and we chose from that, and then we picked from that and got the album done, and made the deadline. And it’s coming out soon!

What’s your favorite song on the album?
I have a couple of favorites. I love the duet that I have on there, it’s an amazing song and I remember the first time I heard the song and I was like ‘ahhh, I have to have this!’ And I love “God Loves Ugly.” There’s a few on there.

What’s been the biggest change in your life in the last six months?
Definitely just the fact that I open up magazines that I subscribe to, and sometimes I’m in them. And last year I was watching awards shows, and this year I’m on them or walking the red carpets, and getting to sit through the show. But the biggest change has been how much I’ve not been able to be home. I’ve been home about a total of a week and a half since the show started.

So are you looking forward to Thanksgiving then? Do you get to spend some time at home?
I’ll be doing the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. And then as soon as I’m done with that, I’m coming home. So hopefully I’ll be able to eat some sort of Thanksgiving dinner. But then for Christmas, I think I get a good two weeks off, and I’m going to relax at home.

What are you most thankful for this Thanksgiving?
I’m definitely thankful for American Idol because if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing right now. And I want to the fans who actually voted for me and got me here in this position. And I want to thank my family for always being supportive and my friends for always being there for me. The list could go on and on.

How do you unwind, relax, and have a little fun you time?
When I’m unwinding, I like to play my guitar. I love to read. I like to email and play on the internet, go out with my friends, go to a movie, something like that.

Who is your idol?
I don’t really know. I like different things about different people. I love Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. They’ve sold millions of records, and they’re amazing. And their voices are phenomenal! And they’re doing amazingly well.

What advice do you have for young girls who are trying to make it in the business?
I guess I would just say don’t change for anybody. Be yourself. People will love you for you when you love yourself first. And just keep trying no matter what happens. There are going to be a lot of times that people tell you “no,” so keep trying and keep persevering.

What’s on your holiday wish list?
Oh my gosh. I have no idea. I haven’t really had time to think about that. I don’t know what I could [possibly] ask for. This year has been amazing. I’ve got all that I want.
