A Valentine’s Day & Green Gift Wrap Idea from Japan

If you’re planning to give a sweet Valentine’s Day gift to someone special this week, why not present it in a gorgeous red fabric rather than some paper that will just get tossed away. I love the shiny metal can that was also used in the above image, by the way.

My little fabric idea is inspired by Japanese traditional gift wrap called Furoshiki– a genius way to recycle and reduce waste. It is basically a piece of fabric that was initially used to stand on and carry bathing supplies at the bath (”furo” in Japanese). It later became something that was used to carry almost anything. Families often have their own fabric or Furoshiki that is passed down. If you wrap a gift with your family’s fabric it will be returned to you after the gift is opened.
You can learn some great wrapping techniques here. A gracious store clerk in Japan showed me how it’s done (below).
